The Men of the Forest
R. H. Nicholson’s Artistic Chronicle Of The Logging Industry In New Brunswick
Randolph H. Nicholson (1909-1989) was born near the Saint John River in the Meductic/Riceville area of Carleton County, New Brunswick. Here he spent his early years. He was tragically orphaned when only thirteen years old.
Suddenly compelled to fend for himself, he laboured on farms and in the abundant forestry industry. Despite this immense adversity, the young Randolph was still able to nurture and develop an amazing and inborn gift for artistic expression.
Working in the forests for months at a time inspired him. Through his art, he meticulously recorded and preserved a way of life that no longer exists. Thanks to his gift, that glorious period of our history can be re-imagined, observed and enjoyed through his prolific and wonderfully vivid imagery.
The paintings in this exhibition are from the collection of Mr. J. K. Irving who first encountered Rev. Nicholson’s talent in the early 1960s. This encounter resulted in their ongoing collaborative friendship as artist and patron.
This Exhibition at Connell House in Woodstock is the first in more than 35 years. Amazingly, it is the first ever in the region where Rev. Nicholson derived so much of his inspiration.
The R.H. Nicholson Exhibit will remain on display at Connell House, 128 Connell St., Woodstock, for eight weeks, until Saturday, August 16th. Hours of operation are Tuesday – Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Several evening sessions will be scheduled and appointments for groups will be welcomed.
